Most sandpaper follows the CAMI scale, but if you order sandpaper online, you may run across sandpaper grit sized by the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives (FEPA). The higher the number, the finer the sandpaper grit. In the United States, grit is determined based on a gradation scale established by the Coated Abrasive Manufacturers Institute (CAMI). RELATED: 9 Clever Alternative Uses for Sandpaper The particles (also known as grains or grit) are sifted through screens and sorted by size before being bonded with adhesive to a paper, sponge, or cloth-type backing to create an abrasive material. Sandpaper consists of fine particles from either natural or synthetic sources. It’s helpful to learn about different sandpaper grits, so you can find the right options for your next project. Usually more than one-and often three-types are needed for most projects. Coarser grits are used for heavy sanding on rough and uneven surfaces, while fine grit sandpaper is used to polish and finish the surface of materials. Therefore, a sheet of 220-grit sandpaper is more coarse than a sheet of 400-grit sandpaper. Generally, the lower the grit number, the more coarse the grit. If it removes scorch marks in same time it takes with 80 grit that will be a significant time saver. Each sandpaper grit performs a different job. I normally use 80 grit for scorch marks, and that necessitates an extra step in sanding progression. ![]() Will save used discs to wrap around sanding block for rough touch up work.įor me the ultimate test will be removing blade scorch marks with 120 grit X Tract.80 grit probably would flatten and shape even faster than paper backed sandpaper. It took less passes to get uniform surfaces ready for 180 grit. Unscientific opinion is that the X Tract did remove wood faster.Did some simple shaping edges of the mesh broke down and frayed quicker than paper.I'm wearing a mask enough in my ordinary day. Made whole job cleaner, and I stopped wearing a dusk mask. For some reason the dust is removed much more efficiently from the entire disc area through the mesh rather than just the 8 holes in a paper disc. I used a Dewalt 5" ROS with 8 holes for dust collection. ![]() Biggest improvement (over Klingspors aluminum oxide, my current stock) was dust collection.Just finished using 120 grit for first time. I do appreciate the video being posted and it did make me aware of a sand paper I did not know existed.īought the 3M X Tract straight off the video. Some of the most difficult and frustrating things I have ever undertaken involved testing. Reducing variables is imperative and with this subject it is almost impossible to do. Once you burrow down in the weeds you find more questions than answers. I will buy some and expect in the right situation it will be a good option. Not saying this is not great sandpaper but I think he over sold it. Based on comments like Donn's and Oka's it seems there are indeed situations where other sand paper would be a better option. The number of variables he did not test for is endless. He also did not test it on different woods. I would hesitate to assume this can be extrapolated to cover all sizes and grits. It appears he only tested one size and one grit. ![]() ![]() After looking at a number of web sites and cost of the sand paper I feel the video was misleading about the cost. The video made a big deal about the cost of the sand paper at 41 cents each.
